Academy outlines its approach to Regulation

The AHCS has set out its formal approach to appropriate risk-based regulation across the Healthcare Science workforce, with the prioritisation of those areas where there can be the most effective advances in protection for patients and the public.

Work progresses on development of the Academy’s Register

After the ‘shadow’ Register opened to the first students completing a Practitioner Training Programme course in June, work is now progressing on the establishing the full register, which is scheduled to open by the end of the year.

A formal consultation on the standards for the register will start later this month, with the draft standards prepared following a series of stakeholder workshops and further refined following the series of reports into patient safety and professionalism that were published over the Summer.

The Academy is also putting into place the infrastructure and governance required to run the register in line with accreditation standards of the Professional Standards Authority For Health and Social Care (PSA) including discussions with the existing Healthcare Science voluntary register bodies

Genetics trainees first to achieve equivalence – work progresses at Clinical Scientist and Practitioner level

All of the Genetics trainees who completed the STP in 2012 have become the first group to be formally granted equivalence by the Academy through following Portfolio review and face to face interview. Following their successful completion of the equivalence process,  they have now all gone on to be formally registered as Clinical Scientists with the HCPC. Congratulations to each and every one of them for all their hard work.  Read more about their achievements.

Work is now progressing on equivalence for prospective Clinical Scientists, with a new intake from across Cardiac Science, Respiratory Science, GI Physiology, Vascular Science and Urodynamic Science. A parallel process is developing at Practitioner Level.

AHCS update presentations from Summer events now available

The Chief Executive and Directors of the Academy have provided updates on the progress the AHCS has made over recent months – at an event for Professional Groups & Lay Assessors held in London and at a NHS Education for Scotland event in Glasgow. Alongside an overview of achievements to date, the presentations covered a number of detailed areas including developing the Academy’s Voluntary Register, Assessing Equivalence, Assessor Skills Training and Equivalence for PTP.
