AHCS registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist receives NIHR career development award

Sean Pymer, a clinical exercise physiologist at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and a post-doctoral research fellow at Hull York Medical School has been awarded a 2-year development and skills enhancement award by the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR). The award, which commences in August 2025, will begin upon completion of the “MAXIMISE” study, for which Sean is chief investigator. MAXIMISE is also funded by the NIHR and aims to establish the optimal exercise prescription for patients with intermittent claudication – a painful ache in the legs caused by reduced blood supply.

The development and skills enhancement award provides salary support for Sean’s research time as well as additional funding to allow him to undertake a bespoke research training package. This training package includes undertaking courses related to clinical trials and data science as well as placements at leading research centres and trials units. It also includes regular meetings with a world-leading international supervisory team and will set Sean up for the next stage of his developing research career.
