NHS England publishes framework to support research-active organisations

NHS England has published a new Framework for NHS boards: monitoring research activity, setting out how NHS boards can oversee and support research within their organisations. The guidance outlines the role of board-level leadership in embedding research as a core part of service delivery, improvement and innovation across the NHS.

The framework defines what NHS boards need to monitor in relation to research activity and describes the characteristics of a high-performing, research-active organisation. It aims to help boards strengthen governance, improve oversight of research performance, and ensure that research is recognised as an important contributor to better patient outcomes, workforce development and organisational improvement.

Research plays a vital role in advancing healthcare by generating evidence to improve clinical practice, patient care and service delivery. The new framework supports NHS organisations in developing a stronger culture of research and innovation while providing a consistent approach to monitoring progress at board level.
