New report highlights ageing inequalities experienced by older LGBTQ+ people

The Centre for Ageing Better has published a new State of Ageing Spotlight examining the experiences of older LGBTQ+ people in England and the challenges they can face as they age. The report draws attention to the continued underrepresentation of older LGBTQ+ people in data, policy discussions and service planning, despite the growing size of this population. 

The spotlight explores inequalities across a range of areas, including health, social care, housing, employment, finances and community connections. It highlights how experiences in later life can be shaped by decades of discrimination and exclusion, and emphasises the importance of ensuring that services and policies are inclusive of diverse ageing populations.

With the number of older LGBTQ+ people increasing, the report calls for greater visibility, improved data collection and action to address inequalities that may affect health and wellbeing outcomes in later life. It also sets out recommendations to support policy makers, service providers and communities in creating a more age-friendly and inclusive society.
