Decontamination Sciences
About the Directory
The routine undertaking of disinfection, sterilisation and decontamination of reusable medical devices by trained professionals in dedicated controlled environments is an essential measure that manages the risks associated with health care acquired infections (HCAI) and ensures the safety of patients and staff.
As the UK’s biggest professional body for medical device reprocessing, the Institute of Decontamination Sciences has actively engaged with and helped to lead the major review of traditional standards and practice in all areas of decontamination that occurred in response to the emergence of CJD and the complexities of prion deactivation and encourages future growth, improvement and advances within this rapidly evolving field.
In 2017 the Academy for Healthcare Science and the Institute of Decontamination Sciences announced the launch of two directories:
- for individuals who have attained an Institute of Decontamination Sciences Technical Certificate.
- for individuals who are Chartered Members
Technical Certificate Holders
The Technical Certificate Programme is an eLearning based modular qualification which has been accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) SQA level 6 which is comparable with, Level 3 – Qualifications in England and Wales and Level 4 – European Qualifications Framework.
The programme is designed to meet the needs of Decontamination Service Technicians embarking upon a career in decontamination sciences and whose main role will be within a decontamination service department.

Chartered Members
Chartered Members are Healthcare scientists who have achieved accredited technical and management qualifications to the UK’s required national degree standard or equivalent may be admitted as a chartered member. It is the individual responsibility of each member to ensure that they obtain the relevant continuous professional development training to meet the requirements of their professional register at all times.
