Association of Respiratory Technology & Physiology
The Association of Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) is a registered charity, working in the field of physiological measurement and interpretation within respiratory medicine for the United Kingdom.
ARTP is a collection of healthcare scientists, often working with partner organisations and societies, to produce papers, national guidelines and standards for good practice.
ARTP links with equivalent national organisations around the world to deliver global standards in respiratory healthcare involving respiratory technology and physiology (such as Assembly 9 of the European Respiratory Society)
About the Register
The Spirometry National Register (the National Register) is a list of practitioners and operators who are certified and demonstrate ongoing competence in the performance and/or clinical reporting of spirometry. We host the National Register for the Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP).
Spirometry is a test used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breathe out in one forced breath.. The National Register is not mandatory but it ensures that all practitioners involved in spirometry have their skills assessed and are certified as competent.
The ARTP Spirometry Certification is the only nationally recognised certification in the performance and interpretation of spirometry, and consequent entry onto the National Register, and is supported by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Current ARTP members include:
- Clinical Physiologists
- Clinical Scientists
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Equipment Manufacturers
You can find out more about the National Register on the ARTP website, here

Join the Register
You need to have completed an ARTP Spirometry Certificate before you can join the Register.
The ARTP Spirometry Certificate has assessment requirements which allow you to demonstrate your ability to either perform and/or interpret quality assured diagnostic Spirometry.
Please visit the spirometry certification page for more information.
