CEP-UK and AHCS to Close Portfolio Registration Pathway for Clinical Exercise Physiologists in December 2026
CEP-UK and the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) have announced that the portfolio registration pathway (also referred to as the equivalence pathway) for Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) will close on 31st December 2026. After this date, registration with the AHCS will only be available to individuals who have graduated from AHCS-accredited MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology programmes.
Since its introduction in 2021, the portfolio pathway has allowed practicing Clinical Exercise Physiologists with relevant qualifications and clinical experience to register with the AHCS, supporting the development of a standardised, high-quality workforce across the UK and raising the profile of the profession across the NHS and private healthcare. To date, 164 professionals have registered through this route.
In 2022, CEP-UK and AHCS successfully launched a national Curriculum Framework to guide the accreditation of MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology programmes. These accredited programmes ensure graduates meet the AHCS Standards of Proficiency, AHCS Good Scientific Practice and uphold the professional Scope of Practice for Clinical Exercise Physiologists. There are currently six UK universities offering AHCS-accredited MSc programmes, with more in development.
This strategic shift supports the ongoing growth of the profession and aims to further embed Clinical Exercise Physiologists within NHS and private healthcare services. It also reinforces the importance of education and clinical competency in delivering safe and effective patient care.
CEP-UK and the AHCS strongly encourage all Clinical Exercise Physiologists currently working towards registration via the portfolio pathway to apply by 31st December 2026. Those with an application by this date will be given sufficient time to complete the registration process.
To apply please visit the AHCS homepage and click on the ‘join a register’ button in the top right corner. Click Healthcare Science Practitioner register, create a profile and then select new application followed by Clinical Exercise Physiologist (Portfolio) register on the my application dashboard. This will then open a new form where you can upload documents and add all the necessary information before submitting.
