Cancer Research UK share Cancer in the UK 2026 overview
Cancer Research UK reports that more than 403,000 people are now diagnosed with cancer each year in the UK, the first time the annual number has exceeded 400,000. This equates to around 1,100 diagnoses a day, according to its Cancer in the UK Report 2026.
The increase is largely driven by a growing and ageing population, though rising incidence rates, improved detection, and preventable risk factors such as smoking and obesity also contribute. Smoking alone is estimated to cause around 57,700 cancer cases annually.
Survival outcomes have continued to improve, with around half of those diagnosed now surviving at least 10 years, compared with one in four in the early 1970s. However, the report highlights ongoing pressures on cancer services, including long waiting times and late-stage diagnosis.
Cancer Research UK notes that further progress will depend on effective prevention, earlier diagnosis through screening, and sustained investment in cancer services and research.
