New Report Calls for Workforce-Centred AI Adoption Across the NHS

A new report commissioned by NHS England London Region argues that NHS AI adoption should focus not only on productivity gains but also on its wider impact on the workforce. The report, Beyond productivity: AI and NHS workforce implications, examines how non-clinical AI tools and ambient voice technologies are changing roles, skills and ways of working across the NHS.

Developed by London’s three Health Innovation Networks, including UCLPartners, the report highlights that while AI can reduce administrative burden, it may also redistribute work by creating new responsibilities related to oversight, validation, accountability and professional judgement.

The authors suggest that workforce planning, governance, role design and staff training need to evolve alongside AI deployment. The report calls for clearer governance, better measures of value and productivity, stronger support for workforce development, and greater shared learning across the NHS.

The findings come as NHS England plans to expand access to Microsoft 365 Copilot across healthcare services, with rollout to clinicians and support staff expected by October 2026.
